Recently, a woman was found unconscious near Nonhyeon Station in Seoul’s Gangnam district, and reports indicated that propofol and syringes were discovered at the scene. The exact facts of the case have not yet been fully confirmed. Therefore, it would be inappropriate to speculate about or generalize from an individual’s circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, the incident brings back a question South Korea has been confronting for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did South Korea become the first country in the world to classify propofol as a controlled psychotropic substance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Becoming the First Country Was a Sign of Danger, Not an Achievement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Propofol is a medical anesthetic commonly used during surgeries and endoscopic procedures. While highly useful in clinical settings, concerns about dependency and abuse have long surrounded the drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to “Propofol Abuse in Professionals,” published in the Journal of Korean Medical Science (JKMS), South Korea became the first country in the world to classify propofol as a psychotropic controlled substance in 2011. The study argues that the decision was not a preventive measure but a response to an abuse problem that had already become a reality. Between 2000 and 2011, 20 of 36 propofol-related deaths were directly associated with abuse, and more than 70 percent of those deaths involved healthcare professionals. Reports of propofol abuse were also documented in seven of sixty-one university hospitals surveyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medicine explains the dangers of propofol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psychology explains human emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bible goes one step further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scripture identifies humanity’s deepest problem not merely as addiction, anxiety, or depression, but as separation from God. It teaches that human beings were created to depend upon God, yet after becoming disconnected from Him, they continuously seek substitutes to fill their inner emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeremiah 2:13 describes it this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The image is powerful. Humanity abandons the source of living water and attempts to satisfy its thirst through containers that cannot hold water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Money, success, status, relationships, consumption, and pleasure may provide temporary satisfaction. Yet none can serve as the ultimate foundation of human existence. As a result, people often find themselves trapped in a cycle of temporary fulfillment followed by deeper emptiness and an increasing desire for stronger stimulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bible describes this not merely as a behavioral problem but as a problem of misplaced dependence\u2014placing something else at the center where God was meant to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There Is a Question More Important Than Propofol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The truth behind the Nonhyeon Station incident will ultimately be determined through investigation. Yet the broader question raised by the event remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Korea likely did not become the world’s first propofol-controlled nation simply because of a drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind the drug lies anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind the anxiety lies emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And behind the emptiness lies a society struggling with meaning, direction, and dependence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
